Middle School Bans “67”

The term “67” has officially been banned within the Middle School and students are outraged. Popularized by rapper Skrilla, LaMelo Ball’s height, and “Mason 67 kid” (pictured below), 67 has been at the forefront of the Meme world since the middle of the year. When someone says “six-seven,” they often perform a hand gesture where they move both hands up and down with their palms open and facing upwards, as if they are weighing two things.
The immediate consequence for the outlawed use of the term is a Hornet Card Mark – three of which result in a detention.
Reportedly, the use – and possible overuse – of the term during classes sparked concern amongst administrators at the beginning of September. Within days, the use of the term was banned completely. While many suspected that the ban was a result of the disruption of class caused by the constant use of the term, I have been informed that there was an entirely different reason. Middle School principle Mr. Hammond reportedly cited that the term “67” was inappropriate due to being similar to the police code “10-67,” indicating a report of death or that a dead body had been discovered.
Although the term is generally used in a deliberately meaningless manner, not in any way related to any police codes, the Middle School seems to have successfully used this as an excuse to keep classrooms clear of the distractions and disruptions that would likely stem from the constant shouting of the term. I would argue that this ban, though in some ways restricting, is a positive thing for the Middle School.
