Cafeteria Review
Written by: Zane Hermberg
During a rigorous school day, lunch is an important period of relief and recovery. It plays a key role in giving the strength needed to finish the school day, but how well it serves this role depends on a mostly random menu. If lunch is “good”, it can help you power through the last two classes of the day. But if lunch is “bad”, it can make an already rough day even worse. Here is an ideal lunch menu for an ideal week, composed of the best foods our cafeteria serves, which would result in the best school week possible.
Monday - Pulled Pork With Rice: Most Mondays, unfortunately, are hot dog day. The dogs are slimy, have an odd texture, and they terrify me. Hot dog Mondays should be abolished. On an ideal Monday, pulled pork and rice should be served instead. I like to put both in a bowl, and drench them in BBQ sauce. However you prepare it, it’s better than hot dogs.
Tuesday - Tacos: This is a very customizable option. The lunchroom provides hard and soft shells, ground beef or shredded chicken depending on the day, and you can add beans, mole sauce, cheese, and sour cream at your leisure. I would also recommend hitting the sauce rack, whether it be for hot sauce, Tabasco, or whatever else you can find.
Wednesday - Korean Rice Bowls: I haven’t seen this served in several years, which is a shame, because it was one of my favorite dishes. It was both healthy and delicious. On top of a soft white rice base, I would add grilled chicken and refreshing broccoli, and I would finish it off with Yum Yum Sauce, which added some creaminess to a bowl full of crisp texture. I would love to see this dish return to the cafeteria.
Thursday - Chicken Pesto Sandwiches: It does not happen very often, but every now and then, a familiar scent will hit my nose, as I walk into the lunchroom. My friends and I will hustle toward the self-service stations, and upon seeing rows after rows of our favorite green sandwiches, we will turn to each other and yell “Chicken Pestos!” The crispy bread, the tender chicken, and the creamy pesto sauce make for a delightful first bite. A perfect lunch week would not be complete without the iconic Chicken Pesto Sandwiches.
Friday - Pizza: You can’t mess with tradition. The ideal lunch week should be capped off with a classic pizza Friday. The type of pizza can make it better or worse, however. In addition to the standard pepperoni, the chicken and ranch pizza is always popular, as well as the Great White style pizza, often complimented with a spoonful of parmesan cheese. A style that doesn’t get served enough is Meat Lover’s, with pepperoni, sausage, and bacon.
This concludes my dream lunch menu. I would love to see it implemented, as I believe all students benefit from the best lunch possible.
