Theater Update: Back to Shakespeare
Written by: Sarah Sussman
The Savannah Country Day Upper School Theatre Department is closing out the year with energy and elegance as they prepare for their final production: Much Ado About Nothing. This classic Shakespearean comedy will hit the stage on May 1, 2, and 3, showcasing the hard work, sharp wit, and refined timing of a cast and crew that continues to raise the bar with every show.
This performance follows an incredible run of this year’s winter musical, 9 to 5, which left a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike. The production earned multiple honors and nominations from the prestigious Georgia High School Musical Theatre Awards — The Shulers, celebrating excellence in high school theatre across the state.
Junior Gabby Galoni received a nomination for Best Supporting Performer for her portrayal of Judy and will represent Country Day at the Shuler Awards ceremony on April 17. Her performance brought depth and warmth to the role.
In addition to performance recognition, the 9 to 5 production team earned Shuler Honorable Mentions for Best Direction (James Venhaus), Best Technical Execution, and Best Scenic Design — a testament to the tireless behind-the-scenes efforts of students and faculty alike. These nominations highlight the technical and artistic precision that brought the production to life, from intricate set mechanics to visual design elements that supported the story every step of the way.
The theatre department has seen remarkable growth over the past two years, drawing in a wide range of talented performers, technicians, and designers — and creating a vibrant, collaborative community. With momentum building and passion clearly driving the program forward, there’s a strong sense of purpose behind every performance and rehearsal.
We encourage everyone in the Country Day community to support the department by attending Much Ado About Nothing in early May. With the success of 9 to 5 and the continued growth of the program, this final show is worth seeing.
