Artist of the Issue: Maeve Hecht

Written by: Tenny Fitzgerald

Each month The Buzz interviews a talented artist to recognize in the Issue. This issue's artist is Maeve Hecht. Maeve Hecht is a junior in drawing and painting with Ms. Duthu. Ms. Duthu describes Maeve as a kind, hardworking, independent, and extremely creative person. She wishes she could have 100 more of her. Her classmates describe her as a consistently helpful hand, and a focused role model.

Although Maeve is talented in many mediums, her favorite is oil pastel. Maeve is currently working on an independent study of marine life done in oil pastel. Maeve grew up going to Cape Cod each summer and describes it as a second home. She found inspiration for her piece through the years of collecting seashells and appreciating the ocean views.

Maeve says her love for creating began with her grandmother. Maeve's grandmother is an artist and her house had a room dedicated to painting. Whenever Maeve went to visit her grandmother, they would paint together. These childhood memories laid the foundation for her creative talent.

Maeve was selected for a week-long exclusive art trip to France with SCAD where highschool students from around the country attend workshops and learn from local artists. Unfortunately, this year's trip was cancelled but she looks forward to the possibility of attending next summer.

This year's amanuensis, the school's literary and arts magazine, featured one of Maeve's pieces. It was a circus scene done completely in colored pencil. In order to be featured in the magazine, students must submit their work before it is judged and selected by a team of SCDS students and teachers. Many of Maeve's pieces were also featured in this year's spring fine arts night. She displayed her circus drawing, a watercolor eye painting, an underwater creature done in acrylic, and a painting of her dog done in acrylic, which was also featured in this year's fall upper-school open studio.

Next year, Maeve will be in Ms. Duthu’s Art Portfolio 400 class. This class is an invitational class where students spend the year creating a portfolio of independent studies with technical and creative guidance from Ms. Duthu. They have creative freedom for subject matter and medium.

We look forward to seeing where Maeve's creative mind and evident artistic talent takes her.
