After forty-nine games, the Hornets’ baseball team has had quite a season! Though the teams have lost more than a few matches, their achievements are still ones to celebrate.
The team earned an improbable record of two wins and forty-seven losses; however, the team still gained valuable experience. Harrison Sammons, a sophomore and pitcher for the team, shared that “the friendships built and how much fun we had made the record never matter.” Other players rose to the spotlight and overcame the setbacks placed on the team. According to Sammons, “James Pannell had a great senior season, being that he was our only senior.” This dynamic appears to have fostered a deep connection between the players, bringing them closer together, not in spite of, but because of their struggles. Plus, they still won two games. Sammons claims their best performance was against St. Andrews during their final regular game of the season. “I pitched 108 pitches and shut them down to only 3 runs; we beat them 9-5,” Sammons raved.
Looking forward to next year, the same question that looms over all competitive teams is similarly affecting the baseballers: what will happen in our new region? Sammons seems hopeful about the change, feeling like the team will be more successful in the 2026/2027 season. “We are only losing one senior, [and as] a team we have great chemistry,” he explains. Because of the losses the team faced, they have grown stronger together, motivating them forward as they continue to improve.
Truly, SCDS baseball is not just a team; it’s a community, and the group’s resilience and connection are its strongest qualities.
