The Cafeteria Review

Written by: Keating Taylor

The salad bar is perhaps one of the most underrated parts of the cafeteria. However, there is a small group of people that enjoy the salad bar almost every day. Almost everyone I interviewed had wonderful things to say. Reese Bailey called it “fantastic!”, and Alice Edwards described it as “amazing!”. There are some specific favorites: Cameron Lotz mentioned, “I love the sweet and savory variety of items at the salad bar–especially the pickles.” Finlay Taylor is almost too enthralled by the salad bar: “Oh, those beets make my mouth water. The hairs on the back of my neck stand up when I taste them.” Many of the salad bar items are even better on salads, as intended, than on their own. There are no constraints whatsoever: Ms. Hefner eats trail mix drawn from the salad bar every day, combining pepitas, nuts, and dried cherries. Frankly, there are infinite possibilities, especially considering the daily rotation of prepared items. Mrs. Williams enjoys a salad for lunch most days and particularly enjoys the “green olives and egg salad,” either topping a salad or alone. Dr. Goldberg brought up a great point when I talked to him: “It’s like a healthy Golden Corral, and it seems fresh.”

To investigate further, I tried a number of items across the salad bar and discovered that they were quite good. Everything was wonderful, in my opinion, apart from the cottage cheese. I know some people enjoy it, but I am simply not a big fan of cottage cheese. Everything was fresh and flavorful, with good balances of spice and flavor. I have shifted to eating something from the salad bar regularly. It’s grown on me so much.

It does have its haters though. Nate Pope explained, “I ain’t eatin’ salad bruh. I ain’t a nerd.” Of the many interviewed, he was among the very few, if not the only one, who thought this way–most already loved it, or didn’t know of its existence.

I hope this article can bring more awareness to the salad bar, as it is a resource that should be taken advantage of by our community at SCDS.
