“The New Abnormal” Album Review
Written by: Kai Niederwanger
Serving as a return to music, The Strokes’ latest album earns its place in their extensive and classic catalogue. It’s an album for every mood! I really like the multi-layered and various styles of vocals brought to the table by lead singer Julian Casablancas. Every song flows well but each is special in their own ways. A couple standouts include the grounded and introspective Ode to the Mets and the upbeat Selfless. This album is a 9 song track-list. The only criticism I have is a personal one: for some songs the bridges and long gaps in vocals don't stand out and aren't up to par with the rest of the album. Some tracks, like Eternal Summer, lose momentum during some extended parts and feel less developed.
Overall, this album feels fresh and unique with its vibrant and luscious guitars, while still reminding listeners of the band’s signature style. It’s like a room after it has been cleaned. The band is taking vocal and instrumental risks never seen before in any of their previous works and everything comes together to form a solid addition to a great discography. I really enjoyed it and will be adding it to my rotation.
