“Heathers” Musical Review

Written by: Caroline Bergmann, Dabney Anderson, and Maggie Macfadyen

High school can be a battlefield, and Heathers: The Musical is exactly that. Heathers has a brand new off-Broadway revival at New World Stages. The leading duo, Veronica and JD, are played by Lorna Courtney, previously Juliet in & Juliet, and Casey Likes, previously Marty McFly in Back to the Future. Many supporting roles are played by other Broadway stars, including McKenzie Kurtz (Chandler), Kerry Butler (Mrs Fleming), and Elizabeth Teeter (MacNamara).

Heathers follows the story of a quiet student, Veronica, on her first day of her senior year. She finds her way into the popular crowd, Heather Chandler, Heather Duke, and Heather MacNamara, otherwise known as “The Heathers.” She also meets a new kid at her school, JD. Quiet and intense, he carries an edge that intrigues Veronica, and she finds an unexpected charm beneath his dark personality. The two grow closer and fall in love. But when Veronica begins facing troubles with Heather Chandler and two of the boys at their school, their relationship takes a dangerous turn. JD takes extreme actions to get rid of the people who have hurt her.

While disturbing and unsettling, Heathers remains a dark comedy, marked by its humorous and catchy music. You may be familiar with some of the songs, such as “Candy Store,” “Big Fun,” and “Meant to Be Yours,” which have all gone viral on the internet. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the original movie, or discovering the story for the first time, the musical adaptation offers a fresh and electrifying take that’s both entertaining and emotionally gripping.

If you’re traveling to New York City soon, be sure to grab tickets to Heathers! It’s a perfect choice for any high school teen who enjoys a dark, edgy romance mixed with great music and excellent choreography.

We rate the new Off-Broadway Revival of Heathers: The Musical a 10/10!
