Book Review: The Bodyguard

Written by: Caroline Bergmann and Mollie Morgan

The novel The Bodyguard is a fun, light-hearted rom-com, written by New York Times bestselling author Katherine Center.  It focuses on the life of a woman named Hannah, affected by her mother's recent death. Just when she thinks life couldn’t get any worse, her boyfriend dumps her the day of her mom’s funeral. While dealing with two major heartbreaks, Hannah gets hired as a bodyguard for a famous Hollywood star, Jack Stapleton, an actor with a funny and charming personality. He values his privacy and prefers a quiet, guarded life. Like Hannah, he is dealing with the grief of his mother's death.

The two main characters, each dealing with their own personal struggles, are constantly pushing each other's buttons. However, due to Hannah being his bodyguard, the two are forced to spend almost all their time together. What they don’t realize is that they are more similar than they think, especially when it comes to dealing with grief and their shared fear of vulnerability. What started as a reluctant connection turns into a meaningful relationship.

Center puts a playful spin on a simple bodyguard assignment, turning it into a witty and romantic story. While being able to write an emotionally rich story, she hooks readers with her funny, comical additions. One aspect we enjoyed about this novel was how Center challenged traditional gender roles. By making the female main character a bodyguard, a normally male-dominated career, she created an empowering narrative for young female readers. Fellow New York Times bestselling author Emily Henry says The Bodyguard is her “perfect ten of a book!” We would recommend this book to anyone interested in a humorous yet heartfelt book. This novel is for sure one that you won't get bored with quickly.

Our final rating for this novel is an 8.5 out of 10!
