Homecoming Week Review

Written by: Kharis Ott

For some, it’s the best week of the school year. To others, it’s a waste of time. Whether you love it or hate it, Homecoming is a week to remember.

This year’s festivities started with “Movie Monday,” featuring seniors dressed as minions, juniors ready to fly into the danger zone with Tom Cruise, sophomores suited up to fight aliens, and freshmen covered in blue paint like Smurfs. Mr. Goldman, a senior advisor, also participated, wearing neon blue suspenders and a minion beanie. At break, the grades went head-to-head in boys volleyball. The seniors demolished the freshmen, and the juniors defeated the sophomores. In the losing bracket, sophomores came out on top, leaving the freshmen in last place. In a final intense match, the seniors beat the juniors.

On Tuesday, the student body dressed up as soccer moms and grill dads. Lululemon athleisure and baseball caps were a stark contrast to fake moustaches and pillow stomachs. Some stand-out aprons/T-shirts include: “Daddio of the Patio,” “Worlds best farter… oops I mean father!” and “Caution: Hot Dad.” Socks and sandals aside, Helen Culver, Student Council President, hosted the water balloon toss, expertly directing students with the help of Mrs. Kiser and Mr. Goldman. Both of the final pairs popped their balloons at the same time, but after a retoss, the seniors won. In tug-of-war, seniors crushed the Freshmen to no one’s surprise, but the Sophomores defeated the Juniors in a shocking upset!

On Wednesday, the high school was crowded with white, pink, blue, and black. During break, the senior boys and the varsity girls competed in the final volleyball match. Impressive technique from the girls gave them a clear advantage on serves, sets, and hits. However, the boys had three advantages: finesse, something to prove, and the unconditional support of the other seniors. Though they had little experience, or frankly any understanding of the rules, the senior boys rose to the occasion and won! The seniors (and Chris Wynn) stormed the court, tackling the team. At the end of the day, students gathered for free pizza and powderpuff football. The senior girls won!

On Thursday, Freshmen wore their most patriotic gear, Sophomores were cozy in pajamas, Juniors were sporty jocks, and Seniors cosplayed their favorite heroes. During break, Eloise Goldstein and Bowie Southern sang “Summer Nights” from Grease, while Clara Garola and Tanner Kaminsky moved hearts with “Shallow.” Andrew Montgomery returned to the karaoke stage, this time singing “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” which received a standing ovation. Despite this, the seniors managed to win… again. Will Paderewski, Nico Chioza, and Will Sparks wore blonde wigs and entertained the audience by taking off their shirts, revealing different shirts displaying cartoon women wearing bikinis beneath. Though off-key, their performance was memorable and hilarious.

The main event of Friday was the pep-rally. After an intense game of musical chairs, sophomores and seniors squared up for the final tug-of-war match. For a moment, Sophomores held their own, but seniors crushed the competition, leaving the sophomores lying on the ground in defeat. That night, the student section showed up in their shiniest outfits. The varsity football team gave their best at the game, meaning the Freshmen did plenty of pushups. At halftime, we honored the homecoming court, and Helen Culver was crowned Homecoming Queen! Great plays by Thomas Holland, Hayes Beaver, and Boone Wiesner led the team to victory, and the Hornets won 34-21!

Saturday night, students gathered for the best part of the week: the homecoming dance. Though there were some odd transitions between songs, this DJ was definitely better than last year’s. Classics like “Sweet Caroline” and “The Cha Cha Slide” were juxtaposed with “Rock Your Body” and “Carnival.” Some students were disappointed that there were no snacks, but after the boys decided to throw water bottles in the air, I doubt that will ever happen. In the words of Clara Garola, “everyone did different types of line dancing together… and we just, like, all united and got along.” Personally, I think that’s the whole point of Homecoming: bringing the student body together. So even if you were tired of the seniors always winning, or if you didn’t dance on Saturday, I hope you still enjoyed the week as a whole and felt more connected to the SCDS community.
