Female Athlete of the Issue: Sophie Myers
Written by: Emily Grace James
For this Buzz edition, Sophie Myers is the Female Athlete of the Edition. Sophie has been at Country Day since little school. She is an active member in both our volleyball and basketball teams. She has been playing basketball since first grade. She participated in club basketball, playing for Jenkins club from first through fourth grade, and played on a travel AAU team for one year. She started playing because both of her brothers did, and her dad encouraged her to play by giving her her first pink basketball. Her favorite memory from playing is winning the SPAL championship in her eighth-grade year, and she continues to play alongside her friends Molly, Sarah, and SC. Sophie’s favorite part about basketball is how fast-paced the game is and how easy it is to recover from mistakes.
For Sophie, the hardest part about basketball is endurance. She said that it can be challenging switching between volleyball season and basketball season. Sophie is looking forward to this season, particularly with its tough schedule and the close bond she shares with her teammates. She loves her hype-up sessions with her team in the locker room, singing and dancing to music. During her warm-up, she makes sure to make three free throw shots in a row before stopping.
Her favorite coach has been Coach Nero. She said, “He came in with a blind eye, and really put his heart and soul into our team. He gets up early to watch film and believes that we can play well.”
