Music Review: Balloonerism

Written by Carter Herman

“Balloonerism,” Mac Miller’s second posthumous album, offers a poignant and raw exploration of the late rappers struggle with depression and the balance of fame and critics. It is regarded by most fans as an unrefined glimpse into Mac’s struggles offering a more nuanced version to his drug use and feelings of mortality than his published work of the time period. The album, recorded during a prolific period in 2013-2014 represents Mac’s evolution from a ‘Frat-rapper’ to someone whose music evokes the most visceral emotions. Through the combination of jazz and soul along with the limited but noticeable contributions from artists like Thundercat and SZA. Tracks such as the pre-released, “5 Dollar Pony Rides” and “Funny Papers” highlight his introspective and experimental sound. The album’s Triptych “Tomorrow Will Never Know” leaves the album will an emotional touch, underscoring Mac’s enduring legacy.
