"A Minecraft Movie": Mediocre Meme Factory?

Written by: Ander Renelt

The long-awaited Minecraft Movie has… been interesting, to say the least. It’s broken all sorts of records, with Hollywood desperately trying to figure out how it managed to become so successful. Records aren’t the only thing this movie is breaking though, as cops have been called to movie theaters filled with people causing riots over a chicken jockey. That does bring up an interesting question: is A Minecraft Movie an objectively good movie, or is it just popular because of the memes?

First, let's talk about the plot. It’s nothing special: a band of misfits stumble upon a portal in a boring town that takes them into a video game where they have to learn to adapt to escape. Sound familiar? Maybe because that's also the plot of the new Jumanji Movie. There are some notable differences between the two though, the villager subplot in A Minecraft Movie where Jennifer Collidge falls in love with a villager after hitting him with her car, for example, was very unique and funny.

Speaking of funny, most of the real jokes in the movie were actually funny and made me laugh. The joke at the end where the evil Piglin tries to stab Steve multiple times was funny. A lot of the absurd things, such as the kid blowing up the potato chip factory with a homemade jetpack, were pretty funny too. A lot of the physical comedy also hit the spot, and overall the movie was funny.

The references to minecraft also made the movie great. There were cameos from youtuber DanTDM and developer Jens Bergensten (Jeb_), and a reference to late youtuber Alexander (Technoblade). As well as references to popular things in Minecraft such as building a dirt house or water bucket MLG’s.

Overall, “A Minecraft Movie” was a decent movie. It honestly wasn’t very unique and it was quite predictable, and it wasn’t serious like some people wanted it to be. I personally didn’t care though, as I like silly movies like the Minecraft Movie. The CGI kind of grew on me throughout the movie, and I didn’t really have any major jockey problems at the actual theater. To conclude: my final rating of the movie was a 7/10. Pretty above average movie.
